Natron Lake

09:32 Posted by Unknown No comments

Accident happens, unwanted thing exists. Beside the green and beautiful parts of nature, there are some dark and dangerous parts too. For better details, see image below.

Makes you go "What the hell is that?", right. This is a shot taken by Nick Brandt while going to Tanzania. It's "calcified" animal, or should I say a it's a mummy (yes, the one from Egypt). But, the best part here is it's not made by a person, it's nature work.

Let me show you, Lake Natron.

By lake, I mean the red part. Confused? Here is a photo from Nasa's World Wind program.

So, what's peculiar about the lake is its composition. It's basically a salt and soda lake. It contains high level of natron (sodium carbonate decahydrate) and trona (sodium sesquicarbonate dihydrate), thus its high alkalinity. It's said that those unusual composition comes from a nearby unique volcano, Ol Doinyo which gives alkali-rich natrocarbonatities.

It's really hot (up to 60 degree Celsius) and corrosive nature makes it hard for most animals to live there. Those who come in contact will get the same fate as the first picture up there. Those who took a dip will die, and remain perfectly preserved as they dry. The animals aren't probably calcified though, but coated by the natron and trona, said Cerling, who has researched the chemistry of Africa's Rift Valley lake. The only living things there are halophil organism (those microorganisms who live in high-salt-concentration place), endemic algae, invertebrates, birds, and fishes in the slightly less salty water around the margins.

So, Nick Brandt the photographer came upon these dead bodies that appeared to be made of stone alongside the shoreline of the lake. He took them and posed them, as to "bring them back alive". Let's see the other photos, shall we.

Well, that's all to this post. Catch you later.

My Favorite Foods (and Drinks)

06:03 Posted by Unknown No comments
Good to see you again. The topic for this time is culinary but I will just write my favorite foods here since I know almost nothing about any interesting foods out here (sorry for my unadventurous stance in regard of foods).

Now, my taste includes spicy foods, both which mean "a lot of seasoning" and "hot". I'm going to rank my favorite foods from #3 to #1.

Number 3 : Lele (catfish)
Rice with catfish, tempeh, tofu, vegetables, and sambal

In case you didn't know, catfish is a thing in Indonesia. It became popular from around Middle Java in a cuisine called pecel lele (pecel food use peanut sauce mixed with variety of food). Then, it spread to other provinces or even islands. The advantages of lele fish is that the bones don't spread all over the place, they are only in the middle of the body and around the head. Moreover, the bones in the tail and the most upper and lower sides of the body are edible. The way that this uncomplicated smooth white meat meets sambal terasi is irresistible.

Number 2 : Masakan Padang (Padangese)

Rice (with gulai broth), rendang meat, egg (behind the rice), and cassava leaves

Oh God, sweet goodness. This is like the definition of spice. This kind of foods from Minangkabau, West Sumatra is like combination of spicy curry foods with yummy fried foods and sweet, smooth vegetable thrown within. My favorites are the gulai ayam (chicken curry) and gulai otak (cow brain curry). Put them on my plate with them vegetables and there would be no guarantee that I will be satisfied with only two portions of rice.

Number 1 : Yammie Hotplate
Hotplate noodles with grilled duck

Yes, Yammie is a fast food booth chain in case you noticed from the picture, but it's really good, so I particularly don't care. The sauce is heavenly there. My favorite mall, and also the nearest one to my home is Istana Plaza (IP for short, it means Castle Plaza). I go there around once or twice a month and I always order the same menu in this food booth, the chicken mushroom noodles. The noodle sauce, black mushroom sauce, and the spicy chilly sauce mix together with the noodles become what you call satisfaction. Try once and maybe you will understand what I meant.

Ahh, for the drinks I won't go too deep, but let me just list what I like.

Number 3, 2, and 1 : Cola with Condensed Milk, Milk Tea, and Strawberry Milkshake
You know, there is a big secret that links all them drinks together. Are you ready to know it? They all contain . . . . . milk. Yes, for some reason, I really like milk and I also like drinking just milk but combination drinks like this that feel really good for a sweet-tongued like me.

Well, that's all for my favorite food. Stay tune, eh. Thanks for reading.

My Holiday

05:22 Posted by Unknown No comments
As the end of the year came, the long awaited holiday finally got around the corner. As for my school, the holiday spanned from Wednesday, December 23rd 2014 to Sunday, January 11th 2015. So, basically we got to enjoy around three weeks of holiday. Not me though. It was more like a week of holiday and a real hellish time before it.

So basically, I joined this extracurricular activity called Jamadagni, a PPA, Perhimpunan Penjelajah Alam or Nature Explorer Association and it used the occasion of this holiday to put us, Calon Siswa or Prospective Students in a nature training called Pendas, Pendidikan Dasar or Basic Education to become Anggota Muda or Junior Member. It was not all fun and games, it was more like a get-down-and-give-me-a-set-of-finger-pushups kind. The Pendas was held from Saturday, December 27th 2014 to Friday, January 2nd 2015 in Subang.

Before the Pendas, my holiday was used for the preparation of course. Called Pre-Pendas, the Calon Siswa was trained in school, in both physic and knowledge. We also made sure that we carried the right things, from clothes to cleaver. Pendas started with a ceremony in school with the parents and the Senior Member of Jamadagni. After getting an hour or two long trips in a military bus, we walked a long way, called a Long-March to our training place deep inside a forest carrying our heavy carrier bag. There, we had to make our own food cooperatively with our teammates, four in each team. For our sleep, we had to make our own bivouac, from rain ponchos or natural material like branches and leaves. As for the teaching material, we learned a lot of things, open and closed navigation, rappling, first aid, survival, search and rescue, and many others. After each days, there were evaluation time where we mainly were being punished to do a lot of pushups because of our faults during the day, like being slow or egoistical. Each day was harder than the day before. It was so tiring that I could always slept well during the night. Well, but I still remembered the New Years night where I got outside of the nature bivouac I made because I move a lot during my sleep and a hole in my imperfect bivouac and ended up woken up and heard the fireworks right during the year transition. The 6th day was probably the hardest one since we had to do Long-March and traveled longer distance than the first one, probably twice as long. And the final day, the 7th day was the most memorable moment, and the happiest too, probably since it finally ended. On the 7th day, we were woken up early just to do commando crawling up the hill. After we finally get to the top, we were told to line up and after we were told to turn, there were already the Senior Members and our parents ready for the inauguration ceremony. Some of my friends started crying and to be honest I teared up a little too. After the ceremony and a lot of selfie, I went home with my parents. After the Pendas, I admit I became quiet glutton, probably because the food there sucked, from hot rice right after cooking to the tasteless banana tree's trunk.

After Pendas, mostly I spent my time home. Playing video games, watching movie, reading comics, and all the stuff you can do on your laptop alone. It was really fun and I wished I had three weeks to do all that stuff like anybody else (who didn't do Pendas). The last two days of my holiday was spent going to Ciloto, a semi-natural vacational area with my parents and their friends, graduate of 3 Senior High School Bandung year '82. We did outbound and games there. Of course there was no pushups involved, so it was really fun as I voluntary asked to come along.

And that's it for my holiday. Feel free to tell me your holiday in the comment. See you.
